日本人選手の活躍もあり、メジャーリーグの観戦を楽しまれている方も多いのではないでしょうか。

日本で使用される野球用語はカタカナのものが多いですが、実は和製英語であるものが多いことをご存知ですか。

今日は野球で使用される英語表現・英単語をご紹介していきます。

表・裏：top・bottom

たとえば「1回表」は top of the first inning、「3回裏」は bottom of the 3rd inning と表します。

The Los Angeles Angels got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th and scored again in the bottom of the 7th inning.
ロサンゼルス・エンゼルスは5回裏で得点、7回裏で再び得点を決めた

得点：run

ランと聞くと走塁を連想しますが、得点を意味します。

The score is now even with three runs in the top of the 4th inning.
4回表に3得点によって現在同点だ

同点に追いつく：ties the game

同点に追いつくことをties the gameと言います。

Ohtani ties the game with a three run double in the bottom of the 7th.
「7回裏に大谷の満塁走者一掃２塁打で同点に追いつきます」

ショート：shortstop

守備位置のショートは short ではなく shortstop と言います。

I used to play shortstop in a high school baseball team.
高校の野球チームではショートを守っていました

ゴロ：ground ball

ゴロはground ballと言います。

The pitcher induced three ground balls in the seventh inning to send the Boston Red Sox to their 10th victory of the season.
投手は7回で3つのゴロを誘い、ボストン・レッドソックスをシーズン10勝目に導いた

凡フライ：pop fly

The Orioles got on the board first in the bottom of the third when a pop fly fell in right field.
オリオールズは右翼に落ちた凡フライによって3回裏に先取点を挙げた

指名打者：designated hitter（DH）

DHと表記されることもありますが、テレビや球場内のアナウンスでは designated hitter と呼ばれることが多いです。

Ohtani will serve as the Angels’ designated hitter for Sunday’s game against Seattle Mariners.
大谷は日曜日の対シアトル・マリナーズ戦にエンゼルスの指名打者として出場予定です

トップバッター：leadoff man/hitter

日本語でもリードオフマンと言うことはありますが、トップバッターは和製英語です。

He is a leadoff hitter from Japan.
彼は日本出身のトップバッターです

抑え：closer

最後に投げる投手なので「閉め」という表現をします。ストッパーも同じ意味ですが和製英語です。また、打たれ出して上がった火を大炎上前に消すという意味で fireman（消防士）と呼んだりもします。

The former New York Yankees closer has signed with the Chicago Cubs.
元ニューヨーク・ヤンキースの抑え投手がシカゴ・カブスと契約した

タイムリー・ツー・ベース：RBI double

RBI は、打点を意味する run batted in の略です。

Suzuki hit an RBI double to deep left field to score the game-winning run.
鈴木は左翼深くにタイムリー・ツーベースを打ち、勝利得点を挙げた

四球・フォアボール：walk/base on balls/free ticket

Tsutsugo got a free ticket in the first inning.
筒香は初回フォアボールで歩いた

死球：hit by pitch

死球は dead ball とは言わず、hit by pitch と言います。英語の dead ball は、試合が中断していることを意味します。

He was hit in the wrist by a pitch in the 2nd inning and left the game.
彼は2回での手首への死球により退場しています

敬遠：intentional walk/intentional base on balls

intentional walk(故意のフォアボール)が一般的な表現ですが、正式には intentional base on balls とも言います。

In the bottom of the 8th inning, with a runner on second base, the pitcher was signaled to intentionally walk the Minnesota Twins’ Maeda.
8回裏、ランナー2塁、投手はミネソタ・ツインズ前田の敬遠を指示された

サヨナラ：walk-off

挨拶のさようならは sayonara としても知られていますが、野球のサヨナラは英語で walk-off と表現します。
